Have you heard the news? Next fall IKEA is coming to downtown San Francisco’s 6x6 mall on Market Street between Fifth and Sixth streets. According to a sfist.com article: the plan is for an urban version of an IKEA store that's about 20-percent of the size of their regular, sprawling suburban complexes.

The new neighborhood shopping venue would make decorating your stylish home oh so easy and be a great addition to the area. Some insight into the much-anticipated opening was covered recently at sfchronicle.com:

The arrival of IKEA, the world’s largest furniture retailer, could provide a significant boost to Market Street…. The Swedish retail giant has no stores in San Francisco, with its closest location in Emeryville.

“This investment and the addition of IKEA will be transformational for our Mid-Market neighborhood, and a welcome reminder that while the present is challenging, San Francisco remains a place businesses want to locate,” Mayor London Breed said in a statement. City staff spent months working to attract IKEA, she said.

Sounds like a great new shopping location for NEMA residents as the sfexaminer.com article points out similarities to past success stories.

The plan is this: a 70,000 square-foot IKEA, roughly 20 percent of the size of a big box IKEA, is scheduled to open in the fall of 2021, attracting other tenants (including dynamic food options) in its wake. If the concept sounds familiar, San Franciscans, that’s because it’s basically an IKEAfication the 2010 rebranding strategy that brought an urban Target to Metreon. The idea here — that downtown apartment and condo-dwellers want their Target and their IKEA but they don’t want to go to Colma or Emeryville for it — makes sense. Inka’s general manager Gerard Groener, speaking recently to GlobeSt.com, put it this way: “Our urban projects are all about getting closer to our customers.”

Sounds like a nice local shopping option. Looking forward to the new retail addition for 2021.
