August in the neighborhood and beyond brings a variety of live entertainment. Here are a few of the many must attend events that are up next this month near NEMA:
August-October, Union Square in Bloom Summer Music Series. Every Saturday through mid-October from 1pm - 4pm, and beginning in August, every 3rd Thursday, from 4:30 pm to 7:30 pm, Union Square Plaza will come alive with the sounds of talented local artists, celebrating the rich musical heritage of this iconic city.
August 1-5, Sanibonani. Group Exhibition with Zanele Muholi, Collen Mfazwe, Sipho Nuse, Lulu Mhlana, Mellisa Mbambo and Nkosi Ngiphile at the Jonathan Carver Art Gallery.
August 1-20, Stern Grove Festival. This free outdoor concert series has happened since 1938. The festival is on Sunday afternoons at 2 pm.
August 1-20, SFJAZZ Summer Sessions 2023. A a six-week concert series celebrating musical traditions across the Americas.
August 2, Dumpling Dinner Party. Get ready to throw the ultimate dumpling dinner party, making dough from scratch, stuffing dumplings & making sauces.
August 3-6, Taj Mahal. Blues Meets Early Swing. Since his first release over 50 years ago with the Rising Sons, Taj Mahal has been a cultural force, bringing blues culture to new generations.
August 4, Temple Of Gold: An Ecstatic Dance Party. Dance, yoga, and sound healing. This is a center wide event, with two full dance floors and one lounge space.
August 4-5, Maxwell: A Night At The Symphony. The SF Symphony takes the stage with Grammy-winning soul star Maxwell, a groundbreaking artist famed for redefining the genre.
August 5, Cassian + Jeremy Olander + Dosem at The SF Mint. This heavily curated lineup is one for the record books.
August 5, Kintsugi Wabi Sabi Workshop with Ryley. This workshop will define what wabi-sabi means.
August 6, The 27th Annual SF Drag King Contest. This fierce and fun-fueled competition is guaranteed to be filled with head-to-head, two-fisted tomfoolery complete with dazzling makeup and costumes.
August 9, Trivia Night @ Sunset Squares Pizza & Craft Beer. Join quizmaster Sean O’Leary for fun and exciting Trivia at Sunset Squares.
August 10-13, Summer Sessions: Stanley Clarke. The legendary bass virtuoso, composer, and 2022 NEA Jazz Master performs in four diverse settings that showcase his singular versatility.
August 11-13, Film Concert Series: Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix. For Harry Potter fans of all ages, this series features a live orchestra accompaniment to the movie.
August 12, 2nd Annual SF Chinatown Lion Dance Festival. A dedicated day of entertainment by local Lion’s Dance troupes, Martial Arts and performers showcasing their talent.
August 17, Summer Ferry Fest. Let’s party like it’s 1898! Celebrate the San Francisco Ferry Building turning 125 at the first ever Summer Ferry Fest.
August 17-20, Preservation Hall Jazz Band. The legendary group synonymous with the New Orleans jazz tradition has remained timelessly relevant, led by tubist and bassist Ben Jaffe.
August 20, 1st Annual Bass Brunch. Thematic Entertainment brings you Bass Brunch - a 1 day Underground Bass Music Festival at Monarch Gardens.
August 22, Emporium High-Scorium: Pinball Tournament. All skill levels are welcome to play in this super fun, IFPA-ranked pinball tournament.
August 26, Pilates by LINES Ballet. Alonzo King LINES Ballet brings a series of pop-up pilates workshops in the Hammett Room at The LINE.
August 27, The Sunday Skate Roll. Join the Church of 8 Wheels for Sunday Soul Skate.
Thru March 2024, Middle Ground. From the Exploratorium, Middle Ground returns to Civic Center. Find it at the Larkin Street steps of the Main Branch of the San Francisco Public Library.

Sundays and Wednesdays, Heart of the City Farmers Market. A well loved Farmers Market happening in UN Plaza since 1981.
Thursdays, Bollywood Fitness Class BollyX. BollyX, a free Bollywood-inspired fitness class, pops up in Civic Center Plaza every Thursday, 11am-noon.
Zumba in Civic Center. Zumba instructor Matt Ziegler leads classes in Civic Center Plaza (weather permitting) with SF Rec & Parks Zumba in the Parks. The class is for all ages and skill levels; meet on the paved portion of the plaza adjacent to City Hall. See the schedule here.
